But with traditional processes of engineering biology coming at a cost and often turning into long, complicated endeavors, success has been too slow for a rapidly changing world that needs solutions now.

At DMC Biotechnologies, we’re taking the call to action for faster and effective biotechnology innovations seriously. DMC’s proprietary precision fermentation process is a holistic approach ushering in the next transformative wave of biotechnology with global implications.

By addressing the barriers that have challenged the industry for decades, the DMC process brings biomanufacturing into a new era, pioneering pathways needed for rapid commercialization, and in turn, sustainability that has an impact. DMC is the platform that is Made to Scale™.

Simplifying Biology for Scale

Microbes have evolved over millennia to respond to their environments as a means of survival. While that may be advantageous for survival in the wild, it has created the need for significant work in process development in the industrial environment.

It was a challenge that DMC Biotechnologies founders Dr. Matthew Lipscomb and Dr. Mike Lynch, chemical engineers who met in grad school, were all too familiar with. Having experienced first hand the labors, frustrations, and challenges of engineering biology, they were inspired to develop a better approach that addressed these challenges: Dynamic Metabolic Control™.

DMC’s technology uses a standardized, two-stage fermentation process that decouples the growth of the microbe from production of the desired product.

In traditional bioprocessing, the individual strains used for each production process require unique process development at each scale and are sensitive to even minor changes in the physical properties of the fermentation broth such as temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), which are unavoidable at commercial scale.

DMC’s precision fermentation technology limits the ability of the microbe to respond to the environment, simplifying biology and enabling predictable scale-up. This process creates the opportunity to reimagine how everyday products are made with applications that range from personal care to nutrition to the composite materials that we rely on every day.

A True Technology Platform

https://dmcbio.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/DMC-Technology.mp4

With DMC, the strain is more robust to the process environment, eliminating the need to develop a new process for each new strain, product, or scale. DMC’s platform enables bioprocesses that can tolerate a greater range of industrial process conditions, resulting in fewer lost batches and better economics than other approaches.

DMC further simplifies biomanufacturing by using a standardized set of equipment, operations, microbes and feedstocks. The frequent failure of small-scale screening studies to readily translate to larger-scale production processes has been a major factor inhibiting the commercialization of fermentation processes.

On the contrary, by combining standardization and process robustness DMC’s technology creates a pathway to predictable performance through a true platform technology that can produce bio-based chemicals for every product and at every scale.

Scaling to Commercial Success

DMC’s Made to Scale™ platform powers the efficient commercialization of bio-based chemicals, taking concepts to products quicker and more cost effectively than the traditional approach, which remains artisanal and exorbitantly costly.

By 2020, DMC Biotechnologies had produced four products with commercial performance metrics and demonstrated at scale (3000L scale fermentation). It has also brought its lead product, L-alanine, to 85,000L scale fermentation and has a full pipeline of products, with markets such as intermediate chemicals, nutrition, and personal and home care, among others. All of this was accomplished with an investment of less than $15 million – faster and more economical than any other technology in the field.

DMC Biotechnologies is now growing a pipeline of bio-based chemicals that it will deploy over the coming decade to meet the urgent need of faster and more cost effective success in biomanufacturing.

By addressing key barriers and streamlining product development with standardized, predictable and robust methods, DMC is creating a dramatic reduction of time-to-market and costs, transforming traditional product and chemical development that is better for consumers, and better for mitigating climate change.

11 August 2022 – The Inflation Reduction Act approved by the US Senate this week will lead to the direct investment of $369 billion in energy security and climate change programs over the next ten years. It is expected to go to the House of Representatives in the coming days.

The bill aims to reduce greenhouse gases by 40% below 2005 levels by 2030 and includes ambitious projects like putting a price on methane emissions, improving the energy efficiency of buildings and tackling issues like indoor air quality.

The bill is good news for advanced biofuels and clean energy technologies. Biochemicals companies may also be eligible to receive support under the Advanced Industrial Facilities Deployment Program which has $5.8 billion committed for advanced manufacturing and decarbonization.

The Advanced Industrial Facilities Deployment Program will invest in projects aimed at reducing emissions from energy-intensive industries, including the chemicals sector. It will support companies to purchase, install or implement advanced industrial technology, as well as to retrofit, upgrade or operationalize improvements to install or implement advanced industrial technology.

While fuels and clean energy are the main focus of the bill, bio-based chemicals impact our daily lives and have enormous potential to contribute to decarbonizing the US economy.

At DMC, we welcome this leadership to increase climate resiliency across communities in the US. As a company with advanced manufacturing technology which is both clean and economically-viable, we will be following closely to see how the program is rolled out.

Matt Lipscomb, Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder of DMC said, “In addition to helping to decarbonize the chemicals industry, this support of advanced manufacturing companies will reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign suppliers and create new jobs in rural communities. This is a win-win-win for all Americans.”

Matt Lipscomb, Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder of DMC said, “Building back better after the pandemic means we need to strengthen domestic manufacturing and improve supply chain resiliency. Biomanufacturing is one critical part of this strategy and DMC is positioned to be a significant part of this change. This financing will accelerate the commercialization of economically attractive and sustainable choices for consumers. We are excited to partner with our new investors and we are grateful for the continued support of our early investors as we advance DMC to the next stage.”

Alastair Cooper, Head of Venture Investments at Cibus said, “DMC has a truly unique technology platform which allows for the efficient production of bio-based chemicals applicable across a range of industries, most notably the human and animal nutrition markets. This substantially reduces the economic and environmental costs of production, allowing customers a more resilient and sustainable supply chain. We’re delighted to partner with Matt and his team who have demonstrated exceptional results at commercial scale already with far less time and cost than traditional biotech approaches.”

13 May 2021 – DMC Biotechnologies has completed downstream processing for its first product, the amino acid L-alanine. The downstream processing was done at EW Biotech in Leuna, Germany following the successful demonstration of commercial scale fermentation at the same site in March.

The purification of L-alanine from the fermentation broth was successfully completed for more than 6,000 kg of product. Product release testing has demonstrated that rigorous customer specifications for L-alanine were met.

Demonstration of the purification process and achievement of product specifications is the final proof point for DMC’s approach to producing L-alanine. As announced on 21 April 2021, L-alanine is now available at commercial scale following execution of a manufacturing agreement with Conagen.

Matt Lipscomb, Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder of DMC said, “We recently announced the successful full commercial-scale demonstration of our fermentation process. Historically, fermentation scale-up has been a major stumbling block for early-stage companies. Delivering products to customers also requires successful purification and demonstration that the product meets the required specifications. We now have product with demonstrated quality metrics enabling customer adoption.”

Dr.-Ing. Markus Fritsch, Senior Project Manager at EW Biotech said, “It was a demanding project at a very unusual time. Preparations for the downstream processing (DSP) implementation in our facility went in parallel to the fermentation scale-up activities. With the deep contributions from our network of long-term partners we were able to deliver product that met target specifications. Thanks to DMC and our operating team at EW Biotech for making this project a joint success.”

24 March 2021 – DMC Co-Founder Mike Lynch has launched a web-based calculator to assess the economic feasibility of products made from fermentation. The Bioprocess Technoeconomic Analysis (TEA) tool will help users – academics, startups, funding agencies, R&D team, and investors – make commercially relevant decisions about technology development and deployment. The calculator connects key process and financial metrics to production costs and financial return.

Technoeconomic analysis (TEA) provides a quantitative method to assess the difference between something that is scientifically exciting and something that is economically attractive. By linking process parameters to financial metrics, all stakeholders can better understand the factors that will determine the success of their technologies. Historically, these types of analyses have been perceived as too complex, time-consuming, or expensive to be deployed in the earliest stages of R&D planning and evaluation. One of the objectives in publishing this tool is to remove those barriers so that every stakeholder – from researcher to investor – can make informed decisions about where they spend their resources.

TEA can be used in different ways. The R&D team can use this type of analysis to prioritize development efforts – focusing on the landscape of technical metrics that will have the greatest impact on their work. The Business Development team can use the tool to start with a market price and financial return that must be achieved and then rapidly identify projects that have the greatest probability of success.

One of the historical challenges in the field of industrial biotechnology is a lack of understanding of what is truly important from that which is scientifically exciting. This has resulted in substantial inefficiencies in the deployment of R&D capital, potentially affecting investor confidence in the sector as a whole. By demonstrating the capabilities of early-stage TEA in this new web-based tool, DMC hopes to encourage more stakeholders to prioritize this analysis from the very beginning of their development planning.

Matt Lipscomb, Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder of DMC said, “The standards to have R&D work published in a peer-reviewed journal are very different than the requirements to create a viable business with commercial products. The development path from exciting basic science to commercial performance is often underestimated, if it’s understood at all. This calculator is a contribution to support the growth of the industrial biotech sector and is intended to provide the first steps in bridging the gap between science and commercial success.”

15 March 2021 – DMC Biotechnologies has successfully demonstrated full commercial scale (85m3 fermentation at EW Biotech, Germany) for its first product, the amino acid L-alanine.

The scale-up results identically tracked the performance at bench and pilot scales, further validating the predictability and scalability of DMC’s Dynamic Metabolic Control technology. Importantly, commercial performance metrics were demonstrated, meaning that no further strain improvements are required to achieve the target selling price.

This demonstration of process robustness and predictability across scale of production – from high-throughput screening to full commercial scale has never been demonstrated in the field and represents a major advancement for DMC. This core technology enablement will also be beneficial for DMC’s pipeline of products that will be scaled and commercialized next.

The scale-up process was conducted at EW Biotech’s facility in Leuna, Germany. According to Michael Katzberg, Managing Director at EW Biotech, “We are excited to report on the successful technology transfer and scale up of DMC’s process at the EW Biotech facility. This demonstration of process robustness and predictability of the strain across industrially relevant scale has the potential to radically improve the field of industrial biotechnology.”

Matt Lipscomb, Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder of DMC said, “A successful biotech business is about more than exciting science. Demonstration of performance at commercial scale with L-alanine validates the key technology features of robustness and predictability that will be inherent in all of our processes and demonstrates that we are on target with the economics for our lead product. We have reached commercial scale with unprecedented speed and capital efficiency when compared to any other company in the sector.”
